Blow-Me-Down Mountains

A short drive along the South Shore of the Bay of Islands through fishing communities nestled between majestic mountains and sparkling ocean brings you to Coppermine Creek. From here, strap on your snowshoes and follow a trail that takes you up beside the creek, past an old copper mine. As you walk through a forest of spruce, fir trees keep your eyes open for moose and caribou. At the top of the flat, wind swept Blow-Me-Down Mountains is a spectacular view of the Bay of Islands: Guernsey or “Wee bald” Island, Woods Island, Pearl Island and Tweed Island are among at least a dozen islands that rise dramatically from the sea. The Blow-Me-Down Mountains are a rare formation of rock from the earth’s mantle. They are the same rock type as the Tablelands in Gros Morne National Park. After a quick “boil-up” (lunch and a warm drink) near the top, it’s a quick descent through the trees back to the base of the mountain and your ride back to Corner Brook.
