Spring Getaway – 7 day Excursion including RV Rental

test page Ever thought of getting away after a long, cold winter to discover what beautiful Newfoundland has to offer during the most magnificent time of year when the leaves are coming to life, and the greens of summer are beginning to show their exquisite colors? Why not take advantage of booking an excursion like no other with Appalachian Adventures to ensure that your Newfoundland experience is one that will live on forever.

An automobile cruising the Viking Trail is really a time machine that takes you to the beginnings of our planet, ancient native burial grounds, and the thousand-year-old Viking settlement at L'Anse aux Meadows National Historic Site. Travel through wooded valleys, over mountains, along a windswept seacoast. As the next 7 days are laid out to afford you the best that Newfoundland has to offer, it is also designed for you to take your time, for time will tug you gently along the Trail, urging side trips to fjords and falls, sand dunes and fields of wildflowers.

Travel & Accommodations:
It is easier than you might think to travel to Newfoundland! With two regional airports within one hour of the City of Corner Brook, and just 200 km to the main ferry entry point to Newfoundland, you have many options to conveniently arrive at our well-preserved wilderness hideaway. If traveling by Air: From North America: Take domestic / continental carriers to the main connecting point at Halifax International Airport in Nova Scotia. Connect to regional carrier, Air Canada Jazz, en route to Deer Lake (YDF) or Stephenville (YJT) airport. From either airport, print a copy of our local driving directions to follow when you arrive. Here at Appalachian Adventures, our friendly, courteous staff can take care of all of the details including flight bookings, as it is our policy to secure the most convenient and inexpensive flights in our area for the benefit of our customers.

Once you arrive in beautiful Deer Lake, plan to overnight at the Deer Lake motel, and relax for the evening while preparing for your RV journey to start in the morning. Deer Lake Motel is centrally located in the Humber Valley, as well as being at the beginning of Route 430 (the Viking Trail) which is the route to the Northern Peninsula and Gros Morne National Park. Being within 5 minutes of Deer Lake Airport, means that Deer Lake Motel is a perfect stopover for visitors arriving or departing by flight. With its first class accommodations and hospitality, Deer Lake Motel welcomes you to Newfoundland and Labrador and will help you enjoy your stay as you take in all that the island has to offer.

Day 1
Begin your excursion with a drive up the Viking trail heading to Gros Morne National Park. Perhaps the best way to put the park into perspective is to say that it's a UNESCO World Heritage Site. That designation puts it on a par with such natural wonders as Australia's Great Barrier Reef. With its fjords, mountains and spectacular ocean scenery, Gros Morne offers unexcelled opportunities for outdoor activities and sightseeing. The park is an area of great natural beauty with a rich variety of scenery, wildlife, and recreational activities. Visitors can hike through wild, uninhabited mountains and camp by the sea. Boat tours bring visitors under the towering cliffs of a freshwater fjord carved out by glaciers. Waterfalls, marine inlets, sea stacks, sandy beaches, and colourful nearby fishing villages complete the phenomenal natural and cultural surroundings of Gros Morne National Park of Canada. This trip has many options available, as the possibilities are endless. Appalachian Adventures are pleased to assist you in selecting your choice of activities while touring the park, and providing you with a complete itinerary for your convenience.

**Extra Option Available**
Take a Helicopter Tour:

For centuries Newfoundland and Labrador has been a land of great exploration, inspiration and discovery. Surrounded by spruce and pine clad hills on the northern tip of the Appalachian mountain range, the western region is the perfect place to discover with a helicopter tour. Guests can be picked up at the Manor house en route to inspirations views in Gros Morne National Park, the Bay of Islands or the Gaft Topsails areas. This is the trip of a lifetime! Overnight at the Viking RV park located 4 kms from L'Anse aux Meadows National Historic Site.

Day 2
Spend your day touring the National Historic Sites on your path, as Appalachian Adventures provides you with a detailed listing of the sites, and their attributes. Also, explore the many attractions with a well experienced guide, such as sea kayaking, hiking, backpacking, or touring.

Day 3
A continuance of Day 2, as there are many attractions and adventures to see and be a part of. While in the area, why not try your luck in the many streams and brooks along the way and drop your fishing hook in pursuit of a delicious brook trout for your supper! Appalachian Adventures will provide you with a complete listing of trout fishing areas, and limits. Brook Trout Brook Trout fishing is probably the fastest growing outdoor sport in Newfoundland and Labrador. It's not until recently that avid fishermen have realized the joy and excitement involved in brook trout fishing. The crystal clear water in the rivers of Newfoundland and Labrador makes a great home for this flamboyant fish species. One of the most delicious of the trout family, a superb table fish, considered better eating than brown or rainbow trout. Depending on the fish's diet, the flesh can vary from white to bright orange.

Day 4
Begin your adventure back down the trail, and let the course lure you away a little, as you discover all what being off the beaten track has to offer! Horseback Riding with Cache Rapids Stables.

Riders meet at the Stables in Reidville at 12:30pm, and are transported along with the horses to Lomond Road near Wiltondale. From there, you will travel along the Lomond River, then crossing the river, head inland as you wind to higher country. Keep your eyes and ears open, as you may encounter a moose along the trail. Stop and take some pictures of “the bowl” a natural occurring waterfall near the top of the mountain that flows into a large hole in the ground and exits some 5 miles away in Bonne Bay Pond. After descending on the other side of the mountain, you will arrive at Lomond River Lodge, a full service lodge with all the amenities. After a steak barbecue supper with all the trimmings prepared by your guide, you can explore the area around Lomond or just relax in you cabin in front of your propane fireplace. After breakfast, it’ll be time to pack up and begin the journey home.

Day 5
Wind down the festivities with a relaxing boat tour of the Humber Valley. Come and explore the majestic Humber River that navigates slowly through the beautiful Humber Valley of Western Newfoundland. The Humber River is known as one of North America’s best Atlantic Salmon rivers. Salmon anglers from all over the world travel to Corner Brook to take advantage of the slow, deep ‘steadies’. Legend has it that there is a buried treasure on Shellbird Island in the Humber River. At this point in the river you will bear witness to the natural rock formation of the “Old Man in the Mountain” which is said to be watching over the buried treasure.

The Humber Valley is spectacular year-round, particularly so in the late summer and early fall. Vibrant autumn colors appear in mid-September as millions of trees show off their brilliant shades of red, orange and gold with the most radiant of the colors in their prime around mid-October. At the heart of the Humber River Valley is the picturesque town of Steady Brook, home of the Marble Mountain Ski Resort and the magnificent Steady Brook Falls.

The Humber River Boat Tour will include a visit at the luxurious Humber Valley Resort where you will sample some of Newfoundland’s famous traditional cuisine. The Humber Valley Resort is the 2003 Bentley International Homes 5 star “Best Canadian Resort” and the “ Best International Resort” recipient, chosen from over 250 resorts worldwide.

Day 6
Why not take in a Scuba diving Adventure with a Scallop Dive in the Bay of Islands.

Day 7
Experience the caves of Corner Brook, as experienced guides take you through a breathtaking tour of some of the West coast’s best kept secrets!
