Sandy Point
|
|
A beautiful island located offshore from St. Georges, an extension of Flat Island Bar extending out from Young’s Cove to the west. A short boat ride to the island, you will feel like you are in paradise. A resettlement program thirty years ago has made a beautiful home for resting birds.
Sandy Point is best known for its nesting pairs of Willet and Common Blackhead Gull.
The grassy beaches and dunes are the principle breeding site for 250 pairs of birds. The island contains a large number of fresh and brackish ponds which are feeing areas for water foul. Small mussel beds around the outsides of the island attract shore birds.
There are four main habitats on the island. The inter tidal areas attract large migrating shore birds like: Semipalmated Plover, Black Bellied Plover, Red Knot, Greater Yellowleg, Shortbilled Dowitcher. There have also been Kill Deer, Lesser Golden Plover, Pectoral and Buffbreasted Sandpipers spotted.
Grab your binoculars and the camera and come on a spectacular journey of absolute delight……
