Stephenville Crossing Wetlands
|
|
Deep at the bottom of St. Georges Bay you will find extensive unique tidelands where rivers and streams mix with ocean currents. The land surrounding consists of few trees, grass, shrubs and marshlands. This makes an ideal location for birds to gather, nest and feed.
The mud and the sand attract the well known shore birds. Dabbling ducks gather in late August, and diving ducks early winter. Common throughout the summer is the Osprey. Some other birds observed were the Red Knot, Common and Artic Terns, Ring billed and Common Blackhead Gulls.
Stephenville Crossing looks very different with each tide. At low tide birds feed in the mud and sand flats inside the two bridges. The rivers around are very shallow and its pond like structure provides good feeding grounds.
While there is not too much in the way of forests, the ocean view is magnificent…….
