The Caribou Trail, Route 480, branches off of the Trans Canada Highway near Barachois Pond Provincial Park. Travel through the Long Range Mountains en route to the community of Burgeo. A town immortalized in Farley Mowat’s “A Whale for the Killing”. Burgeo is located 150 kilometers from the TCH. Visitors may get a chance to glimpse some of the 60,000 caribou that inhabit the interior of the island and frequently pass through the barrens just before Burgeo.
In Burgeo, the hub of the southwest coast, explore the Sandbanks Provincial Park and its more than seven kilometers of white sandy beaches, or walk the interconnected trails and boardwalks that are easily accessed in the park. In Burgeo, visitors can take several different ferries and coastal boats to isolated communities along the south coast.
Ramea, the closest community, is little more than an hour by ferry. Visitors will enjoy strolling around this peaceful coastal community and meeting the residents. From either Burgeo or Ramea a ferry service is available to the community of Grey River that still has an economy based on the fishing industry. The towering mountains envelop this community and provide a spectacular scene as the ferry enters the Grey River fjord. As the fjord runs past the community it separates into three river systems. The North East Arm River is considered to be one of the best scheduled salmon fishing rivers in all of Eastern Canada.
Like no other place on earth! This phrase is often used to describe François, a remote community on the south coast that is accessible only by boat or helicopter. Visitors are astounded when they view this tiny community at the base of steep-walled mountains. François is one of the few outports on the south coast to survive the 1960s resettlement program. This community is proud to offer numerous activities such as boat tours, rock climbing, kayaking, hiking and relaxation.
