Bay St. George South is located on the southwest coast of Newfoundland and is comprised of ten small communities – Heatherton, Robinsons, Cartyville, McKays, Jeffreys, St. David’s, Maidstone, St. Fintans, Loch Leven, and Highlands. On the west, Bay St. George South is bordered by the Anguille Mountains, and on the south by the Long Range Mountains. The communities are within 8 kilometers of the Trans Canada Highway and 80 kilometers from the town of Stephenville.
The area was settled in the early 1800s by people of Irish, English and Scottish descent. Abundant stocks of lobster and cod fish were the main attraction. At one time, the area boasted lobster factories and enjoyed a booming trade with the port of Halifax, NS. Declines in the lobster stocks were the main factor which led to the demise of this industry. People then diversified into dairy farming, sheep farming, root crop vegetable farming, hay production and logging. Today, farming and fishing are the major employers.
