Stephenville and Area

The Town of Stephenville is accessible from Routes 460 and 490, and has the distinction of being both a sea port and an airport community. An F-102 Delta Dagger aircraft, permanently mounted next to the town office is a reminder of the impact that the former Ernest Harmon Air Force Base had on the town. If it’s the smell of the sea you’re after, look for the Seaside Stroll trail on Marine Drive or the golf course located near the ocean. Indian Head is perfect for bird watching and Little Port Harmon is picture perfect for photographers. The Walk A Ways Trail network, five interconnected trails in the heart of Stephenville, starts at the Kindale Library. The Fossil Forest Trail will take you to Blanche Brook; home to a 300 million-year-old petrified forest. The 200 gigantic fossilized trees, that were once nearly 50 meters tall and two meters wide at the trunk, are members of an extinct species called cordaitaleans, which evolved into conifers such as pine, spruce and fir.
Stephenville Crossing, just off Route 490, is home to the Jewel of Newfoundland’s Wetlands. It is recognized as an important wildlife habitat where many species of birds, including rare species, can be spotted here year round. Over 198 species have been observed.
Travel along Route 461 to the picturesque Town of St. George’s, which is believed to be one of the older settlements on the west coast. Here you can visit the site of the first official Mi’kmaq cultural and historic museum. Inquire locally for someone to take you on a short boat ride to Sandy Point, a town once thriving that was abandoned in the later 1960s. Local efforts are underway to establish a heritage and wildlife conservation area to protect the nesting area of the endangered piping plover and European black-headed gull.
The Bay St. George region has been called the Festival Coast, and with good reason. Rare is there a summer weekend without a festival in full swing, one of the most popular is the long-running Stephenville Theatre Festival.
