Cormack Trail

This 182 kilometer trail connects Petites on the South Coast and St.Georges on the West Coast. Former part of the Newfoundland trail way along 900km rail bed from Port Aux Basques to St. Johns. The trail passes through around 40 different communities, so you can stop in and explore and talk to the friendly people of rural Newfoundland. Long sections of the trail system cross beaches and head lands. If you’re the tourist who is up for a challenge this is the hike for you. The Cormack Trail is a physically challenging eight day hike, over night stops at campsites or Bed & Breakfasts along the route.
The Cormack Trail gets its name for William Epps Cormack. This gentleman was the first recorded person to walk across Newfoundland in 1822. With in 60 days he hiked from Trinity Bay on the east coast to Flat Bay Brook Valley on the west coast. Along the way he kept a journal to record the most accurate description on the geography and wildlife.
